“Age is just a number.” A phrase that is often heard but rarely referencing young successful entrepreneurs. It is a reasonable assumption that most successful real estate entrepreneurs have achieved their level of success in the mature stages of their lives. However, this is not always the case.  

Our special guest on today’s episode is David Toupin, Co-founder and Partner at Obsidian Capital, top millennial real estate investor, speaker, and entrepreneur. At the age of 20, David bought his first 12-unit apartment complex while studying for his undergrad. Prior to graduating with a finance degree, David acquired $7 million in multifamily real estate holdings. By the age of 24, David acquired more than $50 million in assets and has raised north of $10 million in private equity. 

Obsidian Capital is an Austin, Texas based real estate investment firm. In addition to his role as partner at Obsidian Capital, David is also the creator of the best-selling multifamily deal analyzer which is now which is now being converted into a web-based software platform called Real Estate Lab.

1.     What do you like to do for your continued education to further your investing?

David “I think I learned the most by doing so; I don’t read a ton of books but I learn a lot by meeting new people, networking, trying out new things, putting together different deals, and testing stuff.” 

2.     Who has been your biggest inspiration for your success so far?

David “My current business partner is an inspiration for me; he’s just an epitome of what it’s like to be super successful, super humble at the same time, and be really grounded and settled. Not only is he a good friend and business partner, but a great influence on me.”   

3.     What advice would you give to the listener to help them grow their business? 

David “There’s no substitute for hard work, and there’s no secret sauce. Work hard and nothing is out of reach.”
